The Ocean Memory Project was born out of a National Academies Keck Futures Initiatives (NAKFI) interdisciplinary conference on the Deep Blue Sea held in 2016. Participants were asked to propose topics that inspired new ideas and new lines of inquiry for understanding the ocean.
One group came together around the deceptively simple question, “Does the ocean have memory, and what form does it take?” to propose an initial vision about the interconnection of Ocean and Memory. After the conference, this line of questioning led to 3 separate funded research projects. (tabs 1, 2, and 3)
In 2018, members of these three initial projects gathered to imagine a new cycle of research (tab 4) which will follow the many questions which have emerged and establish ocean memory as a new field of inquiry.
